Many consider this 1972 session to be the definitive birth certificate of Ethio-Jazz. Mulatu of Ethiopia is the landmark recording where Mulatu Astatke—the first African student at Berklee College of Music—perfected his "Samba Doido" of the East: a hypnotic fusion of Ethiopian five-note scales, Afro-Latin percussion, and the smoky atmosphere of American hard-bop.
Recorded in New York with a tight ensemble of Latin and jazz session players, the album captures a sound that is both ancient and startlingly futuristic. Astatke directs the energy from behind his vibraphone and electric piano, weaving together "twangy" wah-wah guitars and mournful, snaking horn lines that feel like a cinematic chase through the streets of Addis Ababa. It is the exact point where the "Swinging Addis" scene met the grit of the 70s jazz-funk revolution.
This reissue brings the masterpiece back into focus with stunning clarity, preserving the warm, analog hiss and deep, polyrhythmic pockets that have made Astatke a primary source for everyone from Nas and Kanye West to Madlib. It is a record that meanders seductively, moving from the psychedelic spiral of "Kulunmanqueleshi" to the deep, funky strut of "Munaye."
A masterclass in cultural fusion. Mysterious, soulful, and absolutely foundational.
