Arriving at the tail end of the '90s, the Oxnard trio Lootpack landed like a transmissions from a different dimension. While the West Coast was still dominated by the high-gloss narratives of the era, Lootpack were the ultimate outliers—folding underground precision into a sound that was defiantly raw and handmade.
What truly anchors this record is the early genius of Madlib. Here, his production feels like a sketchbook spilling over with restless energy: chopped P-Funk shards, jittery drum edits, and those signature abrupt left turns that would eventually define the Stones Throw sound. It’s a sonic collage held together by a loose, conversational flow and razor-sharp bars, featuring a revolving door of Oxnard heads orbiting the trio's orbit.
Despite its sprawling length, the album never loses its spark. It captures the pure excitement of a group finding its shape in real time—playful, defiant, and gloriously unpolished. For anyone wanting to hear the exact moment the "Beat Konducta" began to rewrite the rules of hip-hop, this is the blueprint.
