Released in the autumn of 1992, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde remains one of the most refreshing, influential, and flat-out fun records in the hip-hop canon. Emerging from Los Angeles at a time when the West Coast scene was dominated by the heavy, gritty realism of gangsta rap, the four-piece crew of Imani, Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, and Fatlip offered a brilliant, technicolour alternative.
Produced almost entirely by J-Swift, the album is a sonic playground built on a foundation of warm, jazzy piano loops, vibrant horn samples, and crisp, live-sounding drums. Rather than projecting hardened personas, The Pharcyde leaned into self-deprecation, teenage angst, and sharp-witted humour, trading rapid-fire verses with an infectious, unscripted chemistry.
From the heartbreak-fueled humour of 'Passing Me By' to the relentless, upbeat energy of 'Ya Mama' and 'Oh Shit', the album proved that hip-hop could be deeply creative and musically complex without taking itself too seriously. A flawless, golden-era classic that belongs in every serious vinyl collection.
Track Highlights: 'Passing Me By', 'Ya Mama', 'Runnin' Through My Head', 'Otha Fish'
