Originally released in 1975, the self titled debut album from Azymuth, originally spelt Azimüth, remains a towering milestone in the history of global jazz funk. Representing the exact moment the trio of José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros, and Ivan Conti coalesced their signature sound, this record single handedly defined the genre known as Samba Doido, meaning Crazy Samba.

The album is a breathtaking, cosmic masterclass in texture and groove. Bertrami’s mastery of the Fender Rhodes, Arp string synthesiser, and Clavinet creates a hazy, space age atmosphere that floats beautifully above Conti’s incredibly crisp, syncopated drumming and Malheiros’ complex, driving basslines. The tracklist effortlessly bridges the gap between classic jazz fusion, driving psych funk, and traditional Brazilian samba rhythms.

Beyond the inclusion of the infectious, global dancefloor anthem 'Linha do Horizonte', the record is packed with essential deep cuts like the frenetic 'Melô dos Dois Bicudos' and the sublime, atmospheric slow burner 'Manhã'. For collectors of Brazilian fusion, rare grooves, and classic synthesiser music, this definitive vinyl reissue, restoring the brilliant original artwork, is an absolute priority purchase for the shelf.
